If you’ve ever looked at your floor plan and felt completely overwhelmed about where to put switches, what lights to choose, or how many power points you might actually need… trust me, it happens to everyone.
Lighting is one of the most powerful design tools you have, yet it’s so often left until the final stages, squeezed into whatever budget and layout is left over. That’s when the regrets roll in: harsh downlights, dark corners, awkward switch locations, and a home that feels unfinished, no matter how beautiful the materials are.
As an interior designer working on Sydney homes for nearly two decades, I’ve helped transform countless underwhelming lighting schemes into layered, practical plans that genuinely support how people live. Whether you’re designing a breezy coastal retreat in Newport or a sleek terrace in Paddington, these home lighting tips will help you feel more confident and inspired about getting your electrical plan right from the start.
How to think about your home lighting design in layers
A layered approach is your best friend when it comes to beautiful, practical home lighting design Sydney or Australia-wide. Here’s how I break it down:
- General lighting: Your ceiling downlights or pendants create a base level of illumination.
- Task lighting: Focused lights where you need to work: kitchen benches, bathroom mirrors, study desks or bedside reading.
- Accent lighting: Subtle wall lights or LED strips that highlight art, features, or simply add warmth.
One of my clients in Mosman thought their build was ‘done’ with just ceiling downlights. After a home lighting consultation, we added wall lights in the hallway, LED strips in the kitchen shelving, and subtle accent pendants in the living area. It completely changed the mood of the house, going from clinical to calm, and my clients still rave about it today.
On the other hand, I’ve also come across homes with too many statement pendants, all competing for attention. Instead of enhancing the space, it ends up feeling more like a lighting showroom. It’s so important to understand the focal point of a room and what you’re trying to highlight. Lighting should draw you in and support the function and feeling of the space, not distract from it.

Why your electrical plans should come first
The biggest mistake I see is people leaving lighting decisions until the end of their build. They get so excited choosing tiles or benchtops that they forget about where their lights, switches, and power points will actually go. Then it’s a rush job, and that’s when you end up with weirdly placed switches, no task lighting, and an endless sea of downlights.
The best way to avoid that? Start planning your electrical plan for new house design at the same time you’re working on your floor plan. Think about how you’ll use each room, where furniture will sit, and what activities will happen there, so you can position your electrical features to match. At times, even doing so may change your home layout or window placement.
My electrical plan must-haves
Beyond layering, there are a few must-haves I recommend to almost every client:
- Dimmable LED warm white lights (absolute non-negotiable for me, they add flexibility and softness)
- Smart switches or lighting automation, if the budget allows
- USB power points (so handy for today’s devices)
- Outdoor lighting for both safety and ambience
- Power points in thoughtful, practical locations – not too many, not too few
- Lighting in wardrobes to add a touch of luxury, even on a budget

Feng Shui lighting tips for your bedroom
All of my electrical plans for new home design consider Feng Shui principles. I’ll always remind clients about one thing: try not to place power points or active electrical cords directly behind the head of your bed.
Why? According to Feng Shui, the EMFs (electromagnetic fields) from outlets or chargers can disrupt your body’s energy flow, potentially impacting sleep and overall wellbeing. Ideally, keep these at least a metre away from the head of the bed, or place them at the foot of the bed instead.
If you absolutely need a device nearby, try using a low-EMF shielded board, and never sleep with your phone charging under your pillow.
Sydney lighting style: what’s trending locally
Sydney home lighting design preferences can shift depending on where you’re building around Sydney. Here’s what I’ve noticed:
- Coastal areas like the Northern Beaches, Eastern Suburbs or Sutherland Shire generally favour softer, more natural light with organic or coastal-inspired fittings that feel relaxed and breezy.
- Urban locations, like the Inner West, Hills District or North Shore, tend to prefer bolder or more contemporary lighting, with metallic finishes or sculptural pendants as feature pieces.
At the end of the day, your lighting should support your lifestyle, whether you’re winding down on a quiet deck in Castle Cove or entertaining in a Surry Hills apartment. Finding a home lighting consultant near you can help you choose the ideal lighting for your specific needs.

My quick home lighting checklist
Want to feel confident before you finalise your electrical plan? Here’s an easy checklist to save:
- Have you considered how you use every space, from day to night?
- Is there a mix of general, task and accent lighting?
- Are your switches and power points placed practically?
- Have you allowed budget for dimmers or smart switches?
- Have you thought about outdoor lighting as well as indoor?
If you can tick these off, you’re well on your way to a beautifully lit home.
Often, the most valuable advice I can give is how to make the most of every space effectively and functionally.
